Learn about the history of the Ngāti
Whātua iwi (tribe), from their arrival in the Kaipara, their continued
occupation in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), their experience of colonisation and
land loss, through to thriving today post-Treaty settlement. This authentic
experience visits sites of cultural significance including Maungawhau (Mt
Eden), Okahu Bay, Takaparawhau (Bastion Point), and the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
marae boundary, and involves about 1.5 hours of easy walking from Okahu Bay, past
the marae and community at Takaparawhau (Bastion Point) to Pourewa native
nursery and medicinal gardens.
